006: Updates and goings on
Short and sweet
It’s been over a year since I wrote on Substack. I’ve written a bit more on my personal journal but most of my writing has been in private. Tonnes of notes on Refrakt, ideas, and plans, but not a lot here. Apologies if you signed up to this newsletter in the hopes of a regular posting cadence—my brain has a hard time working in that way. I’m always trying new mediums for expressing myself, and they phase in and out of rotation for me.
I still love writing, but I’m starting to get more into video. I’m not 100% sure if video is the right format to get my thoughts out yet, but it’s actually a lot of fun. I just posted my first YouTube video of a photo walk to Jericho Park in Vancouver, BC. It’s rough around the edges but I enjoyed the process, and it’s a new challenge for me. Who knows how long I’ll keep it up, but I’ve filmed a second video which is a little different in style, and things are starting to click a little more. I’ll share that in a few days.
Aside from that, here’s what else I’ve been up to since the last newsletter:
We just celebrated our first year in Canada, and we’re thinking about extending our visa’s for a third year so we can travel a bit more. We’d love to buy a truck and drive from Vancouver to the east coast, dipping into the states here and there.
I started working full-time for a startup here in Vancouver. It was a lot of fun, but I’ve since left to return to freelance. This should free up a bunch of time for me to explore more, shoot more photos, and make a few videos along the way.
I’m still working on Refrakt, but more on the new version and approach (more like Flickr × Are.na × Discord). I was pooped after working full-time, so didn’t release much last year. Hoping that changes this year with the return to freelance.
There’s probably a bunch more that I’m forgetting, but it can’t be that important.
My main goal for this year is to document my process a lot more, whether that’s text, photos, or videos. I want to deepen my photography practice, create with intention, and bring people along who are curious and interested.
If you’d like to support me in some way, the best things you can do are:
Sign up for Refrakt if you enjoy photography
Subscribe to my YouTube, it really does help!
Keep on reading this newsletter
If you want to keep up with me on other platforms, I have a bunch of links on my website.
As always, thanks for reading!
